Where to go today, not just what the water's doing.

The SoCal Bluewater app reads all of this for you every morning and points you at the best tuna water within range of your harbor, with the run time, the fuel and a go or no-go for your boat.

It keeps working offshore with no signal, and your spots stay yours: anything you share shows up as a 6-mile square, hours later.

Questions

When is tuna season in Southern California?

Bluefin usually show by May and stay through fall, with the heart of the season in summer. In recent years some bluefin have stayed into winter. Yellowfin and dorado come in warm years, mostly late summer and early fall.

What water temperature do tuna like?

Bluefin are most often caught in water from the mid 60s to the low 70s °F. Yellowfin like it warmer, generally 70 °F and up. Clean blue water usually beats green water.

How far offshore are the tuna?

Often 10 to 60 miles, depending on the year and where the warm water sets up. The 9 Mile Bank is about 11 nautical miles from San Diego; Tanner and Cortes Banks are close to 100.

Do I need a Mexican fishing license?

Yes, if you fish in Mexican waters. Mexico requires a license for everyone on board a boat carrying fishing gear, including people who aren't fishing. Check current rules with CONAPESCA before you go.

How often is this page updated?

The water temperature, wind forecast and buoy readings are refreshed several times a day from NOAA. Satellite water temperature runs a day or two behind because the satellites need clear sky.
